FairTax Letter 1

FairTax Letter 1

By Mike Moffatt, About.com

This is one reader's response to the article "FairTax - Income Taxes vs. Sales Taxes".

You say the poor will not benefit from the Fairtax. I think you are wrong. The poor pay income tax during the year on their small paycheck and then they must pay tax on the items they need to stay alive. They are less likely to buy high priced goods such as: big-screen tvs, expensive vehicles, new vehicles for that matter, boats, expensive furnishings, flashy jewelry, high-end electronics, etc... All of which would bring in a high amount of tax under the Fairtax taxation. Rich people would be the ones to buy those items because they have the money for them. Hence, they would end up paying more tax than the poor guy. Both rich and poor would pay tax on food and clothing, but the rich would pay more because they are more likely to buy expensive types of clothing and food. My family is on the middle. We do not buy the most expensive clothes or foods, but we do sometimes splurge. We buy electronics but not as high-end as maybe a wealthy person would. This tax is more equal in taxation than what we have now. In order for the middle-class and poor families to get their tax dollars back under the current system, they must try to figure out the tax laws. This is a joke for all of us. The tax laws are so hard to figure out and only the wealthy can afford to hire tax attorneys and CPA's that will help them get more of their money back.

I am FOR this new way of taxation. I will try anything at this point. The tax laws we have now are ridiculous. The IRS is a joke. It costs too much to maintain the IRS anyway!! The employees of the IRS do not even know how to interpret the tax laws! Try calling sometime. If you call 4 times and ask the same question, you will get 4 completely different answers.
