I've been doing a lot of research on the FairTax Initiative, and while it is a very efficient, simple and likable solution to the issues with the current income tax situation, it sacrifices justice for simplicity and, if approved, will bring us into a difficult transitional period. The system has its merits, and would not be a catastrophe were it established, but I think we're better off without it.
One concern in Mr. Cox's article, however, is unfounded, and makes me wonder if he has actually seen the bill. He is worried that politicians will enact the sales tax, but fail to remove the income tax, creating a double tax burden. The very beginning of the bill immediately calls for the repeal of income, payroll, estate and gift taxes. It then goes on to enact the sales tax. Unless the bill is amended, double taxation is nothing to be afraid of.
