Three That Support Bush

By , About.com Guide

Edward C. Prescott

Edward Prescott’s Nobel: Won 2004 Prize for: “contributions to dynamic macroeconomics: the time consistency of economic policy and the driving forces behind business cycles".

What Edward Prescott researched: Prescott’s work with Finn Kydland on the difficulty of committing to a long-term monetary or fiscal policy (also known as the “time-consistency” problem) has been fundamental in our understanding of government policies and the business cycle.

What Edward Prescott Has Said About The Election: “What Bush has done has been not very big, it's pretty small… Tax rates were not cut enough” (Source: Yahoo News).

Gary S. Becker

Gary Becker’s Nobel: Won 1992 Prize for: “having extended the domain of microeconomic analysis to a wide range of human behaviour and interaction, including nonmarket behaviour”.

What Gary Becker researched: Gary Becker’s research used economic theory to explain aspects of human behaviour that was normally the domain of sociology. To non-economists Becker's “rotten kid” theorem is perhaps the most well known of his contributions to non-economists, but Becker’s work in the areas of human capital, discrimination, education, and crime is widely known and praised among economists.

What Gary Becker Has Said About the Election: Becker has not made any public comments about the election or why he does not support John Kerry. Becker’s signing of this petition is a little unusual, as he has cautioned Nobel Prize winners from speaking out on every topic: “In terms of speaking, mainly what they want is to have a Nobel laureate… what you say is almost unimportant” and “There's a great tendency and temptation to think you're an expert on everything. Everybody gives in to that tendency to some extent”. (Source: Minnesota Star-Tribune).

James M. Buchanan Jr.

James Buchanan’s Nobel: Won 1986 Prize for: “his development of the contractual and constitutional bases for the theory of economic and political decision-making”.

What James Buchanan researched: As one of the founders of the Public Choice school of political thought, Buchanan has done considerable work on how bureaucracies operate and how we can understand the actions of political agents by understanding their motives and rewards.

What James Buchanan has said about the election: Buchanan has not made any public statements about the election or why he signed the statement against John Kerry’s platform.
