Reaction to Time to Legalize Marijuana?

Reaction to Time to Legalize Marijuana?

By Mike Moffatt, About.com

My inbox exploded after publishing the article Time to Legalize Marijuana? - 500+ Economists Endorse Marijuana Legalization just as it did after I published Should Governments Legalize and Tax Marijuana?. If you wish to contact me on the topic of legalizing marijuana or any other, you can do so by using the feedback form.

Here is a selection of the responses on marijuana legalization I have received in the past few days:

---

I agree with your standing on marijuana legalization. The numbers provided could sway any negative personal opinions. With the money from legalization the problems of social security could disappear not to mention the assistance it would provide to the National Debt.

---

Marijuana Legalization is not only an economic issue, you also have to consider also our social, cultural, political lives.

How about driving a car, a plane, or operating heavy equipment? How will you regulate and test the issue? Will we call the people Marijuanagolics, - similar to alcoholics if they abuse marijuana?

---

Indeed despite any minor consequences Marijuana should be legalized. It could make economy a major Booming effect if they know how to sell it and more than anything keep common cititzens that smoke away from violation of the law. But the Government would never do such a thing to legalize marijuana because then we would all simply grow it form our backyard and the goverment can't regulate it this way nor make money so therefore folks marijuana is not going to be LEGAL.

Sirs: Save on law enforcement?? If we made bank robbery and murder legal we could save a lot on law enforcement.

We made alcohol legal and the results is more infidelity, rape, spousal abuse, child abuse, murder, death on the highways, lost hours of work and cirrhosis of the liver.

I believe about 90% of the physicians smoked in 1946. Today it is about O%. Why on earth would anyone want to make marijuana legal?

I support using marijuana as a prescribed medical drug by doctors if it has proven medicinal benefits.

No, I'm not a do-gooder or a preacher--this is elementary common sense.

I wanted to bring up the fact that I got charged with a usage of marijuana on March 19, 2005.We have to do something about this marijuana prohibition law. When in the hell are conservitives going to recognize that over half of the poeple that smoke marijuana do not lead into the direction of hardcore drugs? I do not get this.

Marijuana is not an escape from one's problems or issues but a known recreational drug that is 99.9 percent harmless. It may not bring up your IQ but I was reading an article about one year ago and it stated a university did research with smokers and non-smokers. The points varied by only a couple. What does that tell you? Maybe marijuana is not that bad. The law and this society think it's such a pathway drug and they keep on telling us it will ruin our lives and we will fail.

The main reason they are getting at is because the law makes you fail and ruin your goals. I very much enjoyed reading the article about what economists believed and stated in their report.
