The increase was led by an advance in petroleum prices and followed a 0.7 percent rise in January. Export prices were unchanged in February after rising 0.9 percent the previous month.

The U.S. Import Price Index increased 0.9 percent in January, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The increase followed a 1.4 percent decline in December and was attributable to higher prices for both petroleum and nonpetroleum imports. Export prices increased 0.7 percent in January after advancing 0.2 percent in December.

An 11.7 percent increase in import petroleum prices last month more than offset a 0.2 percent decline in the price index for nonpetroleum imports. Export prices were up 0.7 percent in October, following a 0.4 percent rise in September.
