Each week I'll be announcing what the top 3 stories on Economics at About.com were for the previous week. Here are the three pieces which had the largest audience from January 27 to February 3 of 2003.
1) Economics Glossary
The economics glossary gets a consistently large amount of views each week. It's helpful if you're confused about the usage or definition of a term. As well, many of the defintions (such as the one for "cartel") include starting points for research if you're writing a paper on the topic. If you're working on a paper for school, it's the first place you should visit.
2) The Dividend Tax Cut and Interest Rates
Normally the newest article placed on the site will be in the top 3 articles read for the week, and this one was no exception. It details how Bush's dividend tax cut plan is likely to raise interest rates. This issue probably won't go away any time soon, so I expect this article to remain quite popular.
3) Recession? Depression?
This article was one I wrote in November as part of my application to About.com to become the economics guide. I can also assume they liked it, since I got the job. If you ask most people what the difference between a recession and a depression is, they'll either stare at you blankly, or answer "a depression is like a recession, but a lot worse". This article helps clarify the terms.
4) Five Economics Term Paper Suggestions
Here Guest writer Hannah Rasmussen and I give five economics term paper topics for frustrated students complete with summaries, issues to address, and detailed lists of magazine articles, policy papers and journal articles. Students have found that this article has saved them a lot of time and effort in doing research.
