More FairTax Advocates Have Their Say

FairTax Letters 2 and 3

By Mike Moffatt, About.com

Letter 2

The FairTax would not hit the elderly any harder than they are already hit today with double and triple taxation on dividends, savings, and investmentsunder the income tax. Furthermore, with estate taxes also repealed, along with capitol gains, many of the elderly would have the ability to amass more wealth. Most of the elderly in this country already own their homes and their major expense is health and quality of life issues. Due to the prebate this would remain the same for those elderly on a fixed income. There are many benefits of the FairTax to be reaped by the elderly, notwithstanding their ability to pass on wealth to their offspring and leave them the ability to live the American Dream unhampered by a draconian, punitive system that keeps them poor and enslaved to an inefficient system more worthy of serfs than free men and women.

Letter 3

Dear Mike:

Thank you for being open minded about the taxing system used in the United States. The Fairtax supporters are passionate about the Fairtax because it is the superior replacement tax system.

First let us discuss something that is often forgotten but I feel is the MOST important economic aspect of the current income tax system.

And that is "THE MAJOR GOAL OF THE TAX SYSTEM" is to generate income for the government?

If you disagree with this statement then our discussion will take an obvious turn for the worst. Please stop now and contact me direct so that I might first understand your definition of a tax system.

If you do agree with the statement then let us start with that premise.

The Fairtax does not care what the Federal Government does with the collection of the revenue it confiscates from its citizens. The Fairtax is not concern with what status a person might have in this world when determining what amount that person should contribute to the government coffers. The Fairtax does not promote favoritism for one activity to another.

The Fairtax DOES understand that certain Americans struggle to support their family (housing, education and food expenditures). Therefore, the Fairtax has established that NO Individual or Family shall contribute to the income used by the Federal Government up to the poverty level established by the Labor department (an independent body from the collection stream). This amount is pre-bated to the family each month under the Fairtax.

The current income tax system does care what status an individual has in society. The current income tax promotes certain behavior among its citizens. The income tax system does not care about the struggle of low income family during the year only at the end of the year when you have to fill out a form to tell the monster that this is what it is.

The current income tax system punishes the POOR Americans with a regressive payroll tax and a income base tax system that lifts the cost of a products with hidden taxes passed on to the consumer through higher prices. After all, if it cost me $10 to produce and $5 in taxes to manufacture, I sure am not going to sell it to the consumer at $11 but I have to recoup my taxes of $5 so I will sell at $16 to the consumer.

I ASK YOU WHO PAYS THE CORPORATE TAX? The Corporation or the Consumer?

THAT COMPLETES BASIC ECONOMIC THERORY ON TAX SYSTEMS-----WHICH DO YOU THINK PROMOTES MORE FREEDOM TO AN INDIVIDUAL?

After all the US revolted from Britain-- started with simple three cent tax on tea?
