First, let me preface this comment with the fact that I feel it's high time we collectively shake off our apathy and do something about the antiquated and unfair income tax system we currently have in this country. I am on a quest to find alternatives and so far the FairTax seems to be the heavy favortite on fairness and actually has the support of enough bipartisan representation that it could get some legs. Information and knowledge are the key.

I have just read through 4 articles on this site that set out all the pros and cons of the FairTax. The pros are listed and are overwhelming, yet each columist felt the need to add in the article that the bill will probably not stand a chance getting signed into legislation and that they doubted the validaty of the FairTax in one manner or another. I am unsure that there is an absolute "FairTax" when you use such comparisions as ratios of earnings to tax rates to determine the fairness of a thing such as this. There is no level playing field. Never has been, never will be. However, you can make it possible that the folks toward the bottom of the pile are encouraged to participate in the overall costs of things and you can help these same individuals deal with the costs of a consumer tax through the monthly pre-bate. The top 1% that are being presented as the getting the largest tax cut are also the same group pay 90% of the total tax bill in this country. Why is this not recognized and presented as well? They will still carry the largest load of all the tax paying groups because they consume much more that the middle-class or lower-class consumers. Lear Jets and Mercedes are expensive you know!

If you are truly out to present a fair and unbiased information series on a subject as important as this, I would hope that you would make the full effort to point out all facts and figures, not just the select few that support one side or another.

Furthermore, why write such things only to then cast doubt on it? This seems to reveal your true intentions. This country is in dire need of change. Not just the tax code, but on a larger social level. People need to change the way that they operate and think about their behavior and the repercussions of actions and decisions. This society has embraced the ideas of "living beyond your means" and not placed value on savings and planning for your future. The FairTax could help move us back towards this kind of operation. People must become more individually responcible in all aspects of their lives or we will become something that is un-American, then what would be the point. I hope we're not already too late.
