FairTax - Fourth Letter

By Mike Moffatt, About.com Guide

Mike: Sure am glad I found you. I am a LONG time subscriber of About.com.

What is needed is a Sales Tax on Advertising.

All over the world, there is a problem with Taxes.

What is the ONE Thing we have TO MUCH OF?

Advertising!

Most people don't realize there is NO Sales Tax on Advertising.

Estimates for Advertising Spending for 2002 are $608.5 Billion.

If there was only a 5% Sales tax the STATES would get $30.4 Billion of NEEDED tax income.

If NV got it's share it would be about $3 billion a year.

It is the MOST PAINLESS TAX available.

What do you think?

The problem is - How do we spread the word?

Would you be willing to give up 5% of the Ads you see and not have to pay any new taxes?

----

A very interesting idea! It comes from the old philosophy that we should tax things we dislike and give subsidies to things we like.

One thing to keep in mind is that taxes change spending patterns, so a 5% tax may cause advertisers to spend less, so the states probably wouldn't get an extra $30.4 billion.

The other problem is more of a personal one: About.com lives off of advertising revenue, so anything to diminish that might put me out of a job.

Thanks for writing,

Mike.
